- X is what % of Y = (X ÷ Y) × 100
- X is P% of what = X ÷ (P ÷ 100)
Examples
- Tax on a bill: 18% of 2,500 = 0.18 × 2,500 = 450.
- Test score: 45 out of 60 = 45 ÷ 60 × 100 = 75%.
- Finding the total: a ₹30 deposit is 20% of the price, so the price is 30 ÷ 0.2 = 150.
Frequently asked questions
Is X% of Y the same as Y% of X?
Yes. 8% of 50 and 50% of 8 are both 4, because multiplication is commutative. This can make mental maths easier.
How do I work out a percentage in my head?
Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then scale. 15% of 80 = 10% (8) + 5% (4) = 12.
Can percentages be more than 100?
Yes. 150% of 40 is 60. A part can exceed the whole when you compare growth or targets.
