Formula
Percentage change = (New − Original) ÷ |Original| × 100
Increase by P% = Value × (1 + P/100) Decrease by P% = Value × (1 − P/100)
Examples
- Rent rise: 1,200 → 1,500 is (300 ÷ 1,200) × 100 = 25% increase.
- Price cut: 80 → 60 is (−20 ÷ 80) × 100 = 25% decrease.
- Why +25% then −25% is not zero: 100 → 125 → 93.75, because the second 25% is taken from a larger number.
Frequently asked questions
Is percentage change the same as percentage difference?
No. Percentage change compares to the original value. Percentage difference compares two values to their average and has no direction.
What about percentage points?
If an interest rate moves from 5% to 6%, that is a rise of 1 percentage point but a 20% increase in the rate itself.
