BMI Calculator

Body mass index (BMI) compares your weight with your height. It is a quick screening measure used by doctors and public-health bodies to group adults into weight categories. It does not measure body fat directly, so read the result alongside the notes below.

Step-by-step working
  1. Weight = 70 kg, height = 1.75 m
  2. BMI = weight ÷ height² = 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.9

For adults 20 and over. Many Asian health authorities, including in India, use lower cut-offs (overweight from 23, obesity from 25 or 27.5) because risk rises at lower BMI. Children and teens need age- and sex-specific percentiles.

Frequently asked questions

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

Not always. Muscle is denser than fat, so very muscular people can have a high BMI with low body fat. A waist measurement or the Body Fat Estimator adds context.

Does BMI differ for men and women?

The adult formula and cut-offs are the same for both. Body composition differs, which is one of the measure’s limitations.
