BMR Calculator

Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the energy your body uses at complete rest to keep you alive: breathing, circulation, temperature and cell repair. It is the starting point for working out daily calorie needs.

Units
Sex
years

BMR (Mifflin–St Jeor)1,649 kcal/day
BMR (Harris–Benedict, revised)
1,696 kcal/day
Per hour

Step-by-step working
  1. Mifflin–St Jeor: 10 × 70 + 6.25 × 175 − 5 × 30 + 5 = 1,649

Mifflin–St Jeor is generally considered the more accurate of the two for most adults. Multiply BMR by an activity factor to estimate total daily needs; the TDEE Calculator does this for you.

How to use the BMR Calculator

  1. Choose units and sex.
  2. Enter age, weight and height.
  3. Press Calculate.

Formula

Mifflin–St Jeor (kcal/day): 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age + s, where s = +5 for males and −161 for females.

Harris–Benedict (Roza & Shizgal, 1984): men 88.362 + 13.397W + 4.799H − 5.677A; women 447.593 + 9.247W + 3.098H − 4.330A.

Examples

  • Man, 30, 70 kg, 175 cm: 700 + 1,093.75 − 150 + 5 = 1,649 kcal/day.

Frequently asked questions

Is BMR the same as RMR?

They are close. Resting metabolic rate is measured under slightly less strict conditions and is usually a little higher.
